Massage Therapy
Massage, according to the English Dictionary, means "The manipulation of soft tissues of the body with the hands." This would make sense because the word itself is believed to have derived from the Arabic "mass" or "mas'h" which means "to press softly."
Ancient writings show that the Chinese had a system of massage 5,000 years ago, as did the Hindus, Japanese and Ancient Egyptians. The writers of the Greek Dynasty show that it was an important part of their medicinal system and this was transferred to the Roman Empire. Galen, a famous Physician in Rome during 2nd Century AD was an advocate of massage in the treatment of injuries and certain diseases.
Massage seemed to disappear with the decline of the Roman Empire and through the Middle Ages until it reappeared in writings in the 16th Century.
In the 19th Century, a Swede, Henrich Ling developed a scientific system based on exercise and physiology and upon his death in 1839 it formed the basis of the modern concept of massage.
